ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY TO THE CREDIT OF BFFAR
Over two and a half years ago concerned citizen and
employees of the Emory L.
Bennett Veterans Nursing home began to come to me with concerns
about the way the new administrator was treating our Veterans. I began
to look into the problem.
It started with removal of their Christmas decorations
and got worse fast. Locking patio doors to their rooms so they could not
go out them. Making life a living hell for the staff forcing many to
quit and firing others. I took these complaints to her bosses in Largo
Florida. A meeting was ordered by her bosses between her and me. To no
avail, the problems continued. I worked with staff and volunteers and
compiled a 14 page list of complaints and concerns. I got these hand
carried to Washington D.C. to Congressmen Mika and Fennie, still
nothing. With the help of the media (Hog radio, Big Johns radio show,
and the News Journal) news reports went out. This administrator was
during all that was charged with battery on a staff member, not once but
twice. Finally a State investigation was ordered. She was ordered to
spend one day in a training seminar. Can you say B.S.? I and others
continued applying pressure.
The end result was that she finally resigned. This is
the readers digest version of all that happened during that more than two
years, but you get the picture. The residents are finally happy again in
their home and regained the respect and dignity they deserve. I could
not have accomplished this with out the support and help of the member
numbers of BFFAR and the other concerned citizens of our County.
Thanks to all. Crazy
